Question: Are we teaching to the test?
I hear a lot of complaints from teachers saying that they are “teaching to the test”. Well, I want you to ask yourself a couple of questions. Are you teaching the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) or your state’s objectives? If your answer is yes, then how are you teaching to the test? You are teaching what is required by the state. These skills are required in order for the child to be successful for years to come. If your answer is no, then you are probably not teaching and we have a lot of that going on.
Next Question: Why are we teaching in the test format?
The children have to be familiar with the format in order to be successful. If you have GT kids, then this is not necessary. If you have underprivileged children, then they tend to have to practice a tad bit harder. A coach wouldn’t send their football team to play their opponent without watching film, extensive practice over opponent’s playbook and preparation. If they do send them to play without preparation, then I can guarantee a loss for that coach’s team. You have to prepare the students for what will be coming their way in order to be successful.
